NZ bus reveals new greener and cleaner buses from the UK

8 juli 2011

The addition of these buses to the NZ bus fleet will reduce carbon emissions by around 2000 tonnes during their first year of operation.

Friday saw the launch of the first in the line of 118 new Enviro 200 buses to hit New Zealand roads by the Minister of Transport, Steven Joyce. The buses are designed and fabricated in the UK by Alexander Dennis Ltd, ADL, and are assembled in Tauranga by Kiwi bus. The bus is equiped with the Ventura Systems Inward Swinging door in the front and the Rapid Sliding door in the back of the bus.

The bus’s environmental credentials are second to none. Alexander Dennis Ltd is the world leader in the design and manufacture of the most lightweight, fuel efficient double deck and single deck buses. The addition of these buses to the NZ bus fleet will reduce carbon emissions by around 2000 tonnes during their first year of operation.

British High Commissioner Vicki Treadell spoke at the launch at Kiwi Bus in Tauranga and described the initiative between ADL and Kiwi Bus as “a demonstration of the development of the new relationship between the UK and NZ, a true partnership”

Colin Robertson, CEO, ADL, talked about “ the challenging journey they and Kiwi Bus had started on only six months ago” He went on to say “ It is one that has prospered and seen a business proposition blossom into significant investment including a new manufacturing facility, creating new jobs and a winning partnership that, given time, will play its part in transforming the transport landscape of New Zealand.” We see today’s event as the start of a much greater and greener journey”

Alexander Dennis is further investing in this partnership, they have already created a support infrastructure including parts inventory and warehousing in Auckland, have commenced an in-depth training programme and have installed field service engineers.

Zane Fulljames, CEO NZ Bus said,“Even though we chose Alexander Dennis, a UK based company as our preferred supplier, we have negotiated with them to ensure a ‘flat-pack’ delivery so a New Zealand owned manufacturing company, Kiwi Bus Builders in Tauranga can do the assembly, in much the same way as cars used to be imported.”
The region will benefit with 25-30% of all the bus components being locally sourced as well as one hundred and two direct new jobs being created at Kiwi Bus Builders to fulfil the NZ Bus order. One hundred and eighteen new buses will be delivered by March 2012 with over 30 in service prior to the start of the Rugby World Cup.

Further orders are in the pipeline and NZ Bus, Kiwi Bus and ADL all took the opportunity to lobby the Minister on a legislative change required to allow double deck busses to operate in New Zealand.
