Ventura Systems Expands Beyond Buses with Door Solution for MARCUS Mobile Healthcare Platform

MARCUS Mobile Healthcare Platform

Ventura Systems makes door systems for much more than just buses. Our roots are in bus doors, but over the years we’ve seen our technology adopted across many different types of specialised vehicles. The MARCUS Mobile Healthcare platform is a strong example of how Ventura’s solutions can be applied in entirely different and demanding environments.

MARCUS, short for Mobile Access to Revolutionary Care Connecting US, is designed to improve access to healthcare in rural areas of the United States. In recent years, the closure of more than 100 hospitals has left many communities without nearby medical facilities, forcing patients to travel long distances for treatment. The initiative, supported by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and led by Dr Bon Ku, explores how mobility and technology can bring hospital-level care directly to patients.

The result is a fully electric mobile medical unit equipped with advanced capabilities such as diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing and treatments including prenatal care and chemotherapy infusions. The “hospital on wheels” as Dr Bon Ku describes it, represents a shift in how and where healthcare can be delivered.
While much attention is given to the medical technology inside the vehicle, the effectiveness of the concept also depends on smart engineering decisions that enable healthcare professionals to work efficiently within a confined space. This is where Ventura Systems contributes its expertise.

Layout MARCUS

As supplier of the plug sliding door system, Ventura played a key role in ensuring safe, efficient and practical access to the mobile unit. This door system allows the portal to open fully without obstruction. Unlike traditional hinged doors, which require clearance space and can limit accessibility, the Ventura door system moves outward and along the vehicle body, creating a wide, clear entrance.

This design significantly improves the workflow inside the unit. Medical staff can move equipment, stretchers and patients in and out more easily, which is critical in high pressure situations. The door system is electrically operated and can be opened at the push of a button, reducing physical effort and saving valuable time during patient transfer. The dual leaf configuration further enhances speed and accessibility.

For Ventura, projects like MARCUS demonstrate how technologies developed for public transport can be successfully applied in entirely different environments. The same principles that are essential in buses, such as reliability, safety and ease of use, are equally valuable in specialised vehicles where conditions can be even more demanding.

The development of MARCUS began in mid 2025, with a broader rollout expected by 2027 as part of the PARADIGM programme. Beyond its impact on healthcare, the project also highlights how collaboration between industries can unlock new applications for existing technologies.

Paradigm2

For Ventura Systems, the MARCUS platform is a clear example of how its door solutions can support innovation far beyond buses and coaches. By contributing to a mobile healthcare environment where access, speed and reliability are critical, Ventura demonstrates its ability to adapt proven technology to new and meaningful use cases.
